Search engine optimization or SEO for short is the term used to describe the need of online businesses and websites alike to promote their products and services by acquiring one of the top spots in any search engine results. There are various ways an online business can employ in order to optimize searches made by Yahoo, Google or MSN but for this article, we shall concentrate on the simple and proven methods first. At this point, we’re not talking about the layout or design of your website – although that matters as well and shall be explained later on – but the content or what’s inside your website. Is the content relevant, complete and clearly explained? Will a visitor be able to find all the information he needs in your website? Search engine results usually give the top spots to websites with clearly written content so make sure that your website falls under that category. Like I said, the design or look and feel of your website matters and well and that’s what we shall be discussing now. First, make sure that the graphics used in your website doesn’t take too long to download because not all visitors would have lightning fast Internet connections. If there’s a real need for heavy graphics, give your visitors a choice to skip the whole thing entirely and proceed to a more easily uploaded page. Secondly, make sure that navigation won’t be a problem for any visitor. Always remember to keep a “back” link in each page, alphabetize links or any other that needs alphabetizing and highlight what needs highlighting. If your site has a large amount of data in it already, having a search option is ideal and would be something that your visitors would no doubt appreciate. And remember, whatever makes visitors happy immediately means you’re doing the right thing and optimizing search engine results. Thirdly, make sure that it looks great. Although we’re advised never to judge a book by its cover, we certainly can’t deny that a beautifully designed cover helps to sell a books, doesn’t it? Search engine spiders always make the use of keywords to come up with the appropriate results so if you want to optimize searches, make sure that you have the correct set of keywords for your website. |
